Hydrostatic Pressure Testing Determines if it Can Take the Pressure

Hydrostatic Pressure Testing is a nondestructive testing (NDT) method of finding leaks or verifying performance and durability in pressure vessels such as pipe, tubing, and coils. Although this is considered nondestructive testing and failures are rare, they can occur when the test piece does not meet performance or durability specifications and may render the piece unusable.

This type of testing usually entails filling the test piece with liquid, bleeding out air, pressurizing the piece, and then examining it for leaks or permanent changes in shape. A nearly incompressible (compressible only by weight, not air pressure) liquid, usually water or oil, is used because it will only expand by a very small amount should the test piece fail and not pose a danger to the technician. Hydrostatic pressure testing also can be performed with pressurized air, but is generally done with the vessel under water for safety reasons.

The pressure used in hydrostatic pressure testing is always considerably more than the operating pressure to give the customer a margin for safety. Typically the test is performed at 150 percent of the design or working pressure. For example, if a pipe was rated to a working pressure of 2000 PSI, it would be tested at 3000 PSI.

Inspections at Laboratory Testing

At Laboratory Testing, we are equipped to do hydrostatic pressure testing with water, oil, or air under water. Water is the most commonly used test medium because it is less expensive than oil and an easier set up than air, so the cost of testing is lower. Nondestructive testing NDT technicians test tubing, pipe and coils to pressures up to 10,000 PSI, in many cases. All hydrostatic pressure testing is performed according to customer requirements and/or industry specifications.

"Minor problems"

I borrowed a Karcher powered pressure washer from a friend to clean the siding on my house. I thought it was fantastic. After cleaning the siding I washed my vehicles, cleaned my concrete driveway and landscaping stone around my house. I ordered my own Karcher 2,600 PSI, Honda powered washer. When it arrived I noticed the inside of the cardboard box had oil soaked into it. I also noticed the machine itself had a lot of oil on it. I filled it with oil and gas per instructions in the owners manual and attempted to start the washer. It would not start. Having some mechanical knowledge, I inspected the air filter and observed it was soaked with oil. I removed the spark plug and noticed it had oil on it, so I pulled the starter rope to rotate the engine and noticed oil come out of the crankcase. I cleaned the spark plug and left the oil soaked air filter and cover off the washer. The washer started on the second pull. It seemed to operate fine, however, I will have to purchase a new air filter. I don't believe the problems I encountered are a manufacturing problem, but a shipping problem. I have yet to use my washer but after the experience I had with my frineds Karcher washer I feel it will be a good purchase.

"Beware: Packaging was awful for a $400 investment"

We have only had our Karcher pressure washer for a few days so I will update on the machines performance after a longer period of time. However, buyers should be aware that the machine comes in a cardboard box - that's it.... no packaging materials, no bubble wrap - no protection whatsoever. The box was very beat up when it arrived. It's a heavy machine to be shipped in a simple box. We were lucky that nothing was broken.

So far we are impressed with it's cleaning ability. We are using it on a concrete pool deck and patio furniture. More comments on durability and performance to follow after a longer ownership timeframe.
